Gravity and Magnetic Process for Chromite Concentration – Madagascar Site

Chrome ore, also known as chromite, is an oxide mineral containing chromium, iron, and oxygen, with common chemical components such as FeO, MgO, Cr₂O₃, Al₂O₃, and Fe₂O₃.
To upgrade raw chrome ore into high‑grade concentrate, the process typically combines gravity separation and magnetic separation.
Below is an overview of the working flow used in one of our 500 TPH (tons per hour) chrome plants in Madagascar.

Step 1 – Crushing and Grinding (Liberation)

The first stage breaks the mined ore into smaller particles to liberate chromite grains from the surrounding gangue minerals.
Proper liberation ensures the next separation steps can achieve the required grade efficiently.

Step 2 – Gravity Separation (Primary Concentration)

The gravity concentration process is the core part of chrome beneficiation.
It takes advantage of the large density difference between heavy chromite and lighter silicate minerals such as quartz and feldspar.
Commonly used equipment includes spiral chutes, shaking tables, and jigs to recover most of the valuable chromite.

Step 3 – Magnetic Separation (Upgrading)

In many cases, gravity separation alone already produces concentrate at the target grade.
However, when the chromium‑to‑iron (Cr/Fe) ratio needs further improvement, magnetic separation is applied to remove remaining iron‑rich impurities and raise the final product quality.

This combined process—gravity plus magnetic separation—has been widely verified in chrome plants worldwide and proven both efficient and reliable.

Our Madagascar Chrome Project

The Madagascar 500 TPH plant is a good example of this technology in action.
It adopts a full process line from ore crushing to final chrome concentrate production, delivering stable output and consistent recovery performance in long‑term operation.
